week #01 – @sarpsozdinler / Sarp

Who are you and where do you come from?
My name is Sarp Sozdinler and I am a graphic designer now based in Istanbul, Turkey after a period spent in glorious Vienna, Austria. Other than designing stuff, I enjoy creating in various disciplines as installations, photography, etc., though not yet at a satisfying level. In hope for becoming a decent filmmaker one day, I’m struggling to make my way out of this frantically over-populated city and move to rural.

Share your twitter account with us and tell us what you are twittering about:
@sarpsozdinler: About almost everything that inspires what I do and tiny bit of everything revolves around my body of work.
@tarnatedmag: It’s the twitter account for the quarterly art and design mag we are about to launch in Winter 2012. It’s just around the corner!

Tell us about your creative side:
Recently returned from University of Applied Arts Vienna, I am now about to complete my senior year at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts having studied Graphic Design at both colleges. At the times that I’m working on personal projects, I try to produce in what I love designing most like prints, books and small magazines out of a special concentration on editorial design, web design and typography. In parallel, I’ve been doing some freelance and studio work in Turkey and Italy for the last two years for an international set of minor clients from places like Washington DC, Rejkjavik, Vienna and Istanbul, for which I believe expanded and afterwards shaped the way I comprehend this world a lot. When I’m not designing, I spend major part of my time working either on a new print publication which is being published by me and couple of friends and planned to be out in every three months or so, named Tarnated Mag (and you can reach it on here: http://www.tarnated-mag.com), or on Pasted!™ —a t-shirt company yet again scheduled to be on air this November. You can have a look at my portfolio via: http://www.sarpsozdinler.com

What inspires you?
Green of nature and blue of sky lead the way, that’s for certain. Apart from that in a mix order, I guess it is the movies by von Trier, Vinterberg, Herzog, Pasolini and so on, being to places I had never been, everything about Iceland, good taste of music and brilliant typography — indeed everything that has succeed to catch my attention and stick.

Time travel: Where would you go to?
I’m not sure. I guess it would have been either to the 50’s in the US to get to know all the simple-hearted fellas of Beat movement and to have a steak with William Burroughs one night, or to November 22, 1963 yet again in America to eyewitness who tried to off JFK from a distance to be able to answer and get rid of the damned everlasting question.

Name your favorite present book:
Lately, I had found myself carried away by thrilling books in the infamous Ripley saga authored by Patricia Highsmith, until there were no more books to read. Besides being unlike vast majority of suspense novels of its era, I believe it still represents a overly successful and stupendous way of inner-portraying a regular guy, in a very casual manner, who went berserk casually at some point.

Which tweeter would you recommend for @createandrotate and why?
@brainpickings: Just one glance at it will tell it all.
