week #02 – @daycalligraphy / Lila

Who are you and where do you come from?
My name is Lila Symons and I’m a freelance designer and lettering artist who currently lives in Jersey City, New Jersey. Jersey City is directly across the Hudson river from New York City.

Share your twitter account with us and tell us what you are twittering about:#
@daycalligraphy is where I tweet about type, tech, food, politics, and my life.

Tell us about your creative side:
I started my career in 2005 as a graphic designer. I was always into typesetting but I didn’t know I had all this lettering in me. I decided to take a calligraphy class after a job ended because it was something I always wanted to learn more about, but never had time to pursue! After unexpectedly getting really good feedback on the work I was posting online, I decided I wanted to learn how to make typefaces. Last August, I graduated from Type@Cooper, a typeface design program at Cooper Union in New York City (www.coopertype.org and www.coopertype2012.com).

What inspires you?
Life. I often express myself through the things I hear, read, and see.

Time travel: Where would you go to?
Back to the 1960s or the late 1800s.

Name your favorite present book:
I read way too many books on type design and history and it’s impossible to pick a favorite! Right now, I’m obsessed with all of Doyald Young’s beautiful books! I also really enjoy Bill Bryson’s work. I haven’t read a book he has written that I didn’t enjoy!

Which tweeter would you recommend for @createandrotate and why?
@Davidthedesigner because I hope to get to meet him someday.
