Who are you and where do you come from?
My full name is Shaanea Amantha Mendis-D’Silva. Born and raised in Sri Lanka. I moved to Singapore in 2003 to pursue my Bachelor of Honors degree in Fine Arts (Painting) at the Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore. (Affiliated to the Open University of UK)
There I met and fell in love with my husband Kevin D’Silva, an Indian National and a Marine Engineer by proffession. I am now based in Mumbai , India. How ever I consider my self a bit of a gypsy as I travel the world on a ship with my husband, and at other times I divide my time between Sri lanka and India.
At the moment you will finding me hosting @createandrotate from my home city, Colombo, Sri lanka. Just as my very first solo exhibition comes to a close.

@Shaanea. My twitter account was born two days after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks as a result of watching the news on CNN. It took me a while to get used to. I’ve been twittering and following anything to do with the latest breaking news, Art , Cricket and Bollywood! Whatever catches my curiosity, and I’ve found that it’s a great tool to network globally with other Artists & Galleries. @createandrotate is one such super networking opportunity for Artists thanks to twitter.
Tell us about your creative side:
I have been torn between my traditional strokes in portraiture, and art that is of a more conceptual nature, that deals with fine textures that I visualise, inspired by organic patterns I see in our everyday environment. I depict this through the use of pen and ink drawings, as well as rust stains on canvas, and rust relief sculpture. There are characteristics of the work that I wish my audience to decipher for themselves through the complex detail, much like contemplation on the intricacies of everything in life.
My very first solo exhibition takes place in Dec 2012, in my home country Sri Lanka, and has been a long time coming.
My creativity extends to my culinary skills, writing, and even humor at times.

What inspires you?
Things that are out of the ordinary. People that are out of the ordinary. Smells and tastes, sights and sounds. Anything that is new to the senses. Different and pleasing, or even displeasing, but in a new and interesting way.
Time travel: Where would you go to?
I loved the movie MIDNIGHT in PARIS. I wouldn’t mind being transported back in to the 1920’s or even the future to see where it’s taken me.
Name your favorite present book:
‚Midnight’s Children‘ by Salman Rushdie was the last book I read cover to cover, so I would say that would be it., I’m also looking forward to the movie directed by Deepa Mehta, which has been filmed in my home country, with many people I know starring in minor roles. So it makes it all the more exciting for me.
