week #33 – @tanyapirate / Tanya

375867_10150823326007391_1617090025_n

Who are you and where do you come from?
My name is Tanya, I am otherwise known as Pirate (I have tried, unsuccessfully, to upgrade it to Piratay, which sounds much more exotic).
I grew up in England, studied in Scotland and now Hong Kong is home.

Share your twitter account with us and tell us what you are twittering about:
@tanyapirate I tweet mostly about art, my obsession with trailrunning and cats… so many cats :)

Tell us about your creative side:
I try and utilise both sides of my brain (when I am not drinking wine… which is often) by both doing fashion illustration and running an art gallery here in HK. I studied clothing manufacturing and design, and specialised in illustration. Fashion is a huge influence on my work and I enjoy curating an outfit as much as I enjoy illustrating one.
Working with artists in a gallery is not only a constant source of inspiration, but also teaches me how to approach the industry in a professional manner and how to deal with clients etc.

What inspires you?
Life… that sounds ultra cliche and cheesy, but it is true. Living in Hong Kong as an expatriate, there is rarely a day that goes by that I do not see something that amuses or delights me.

Time travel: Where would you go to?
I would go revel in the 1920s jazz era, wearing fab-u-lous outfits and fancy headwear.

Name your favorite present book:
That’s tough, I tend to book binge so I have a few on the go at the moment. I am enormously enjoying Henry James ‚The Middle Years‘ which is the curatorial influence behind our latest large group show. (also, the latest edition of Trail Runner Magazine… but that doesn’t really count as a book…)

Which tweeter would you recommend for @createandrotate and why?
@lil3birdy (Claire Shields) – a UK illustrator. We studied together and she is a constant source of inspiration to me as someone who has worked extremely hard to pursue her dreams. Setting up your own business (especially in these economic times) is haaaaaard, so hats off to her for making it a success. I just bought two works of hers and can’t wait to put them up on my walls :)

Tell us about your creative side:
I have always drawn and now use it extensively in my visual facilitation, creating visual minutes and large scale strategic maps at conferences, events and meetings. I use the skills learnt during my 4 years working at Disney in Hong Kong and Los Angeles to engage and connect with people in a visual way.

What inspires you?
People, places, events – innovation and new ideas can be found everywhere, you need to be open and to look hard to find and experience.

It’s always the last book I read. Which at the moment is ‚A Song of ice and fire.‘

Which tweeter would you recommend for @createandrotate and why?

However walking into the children’s section of a book shop and seeing all the amazing published books inspires me the most. I want to be on that shelf more than anything!
